Deluxe Jaguar Bass

(5.0)
mike gordon on April 20, 2013 (updated April 22, 2013)

This new bass arrived this morning and i have been playing it all day. I am lucky as i now have six Fender basses in my collection and all have different characteristics. (I'm Sixty - one years old and have been collecting for some years now). My most recent purchases were the Squier Classic Vibe 54' Precision Mk.2 (Butterscotch finish - Love it! - a nice substitution for the real thing.) and the Modern Player Jaguar Bass (Model. T.- any colour you want as long as it is black! Nice neck though!) The Modern player has characteristics very similar to my Jazz Bass but this Deluxe version is a different story all together. With the active circuitry in the OFF position, it has a tonal range maybe similar to the Precision bass, but with each pickup up for selection (the switch grouping at bottom right) and a phase control which i am playing around with. It's when the actve circuitry (switch grouping at the top right) is switched on that things start to change. Both Bass and Treble ranges can now be boosted using classic Jaguar rotary wheels providing endless combinations when used with the passive controls. (This would have great benefits when in the studio). But remember you may have to change tone and volume settings on your main amp. I found that i had to wind them down slightly on mine when using the active set-up but obviously all amps are different. My fifteen watt house amp seemed to cry out in pain fearing for the demise of it's loudspeaker!. I got this one with a sunburst finish to match my other basses (apart from model - t !) and as i am typing this out it is on a stand in the corner and i just can' t take my eyes off it! But FENDER FOLKS - why did you take so long to make this one? It still looks like a Fender that has been around for forty years but funny enough has'nt! It looks good, plays beatifully after personal set - up and has a nice comfortable balance when wearing it (if you are used to Fender Bass weight).Only one criticism - maybe a small one easily fixed. The bridge material on the Deluxe model seems to be on the thin side (the Modern Player Jaguar Bass bridge is the same version as my Precision Standard Bass and is a bit more substantial. For the price, it would have really deserved the BADASS 2 as on the MIKE DIRNT slab precision (yep! got one of them too - in Sunburst ! !) so that is my only niggle and one which i will upgrade. P.s i hope you guys don't mind my boasting , but these are Basses i could never have afforded when i was younger. Very hard to stop playing it and put in it's case for the night! A winner and definitely a classic!

This is a great bass. I have nearly owned it for a year now and since the day I peeked into the box and named the cobalt blue beauty 'Mystique', I haven't had any regrets. The tone is great and versatile. She even defined part of the sound of our band. I couldn't live without her.

my ideal bass

I've had the deluxe jaguar bass for about two weeks, now, I can't imagine wanting another bass anymore. There is hardly a combination of tone settings that I don't like on this bass. it's the most expressive bass I've ever played. The only thing I've noticed that this bass can't do, after playing a jazz bass, is blend the volume levels of the two pickups, but I'm not missing that feature, really. It's the best-looking instrument I've ever seen or used, both on it's own, and when it's on me. I love the surf rock/shoegaze aesthetics that it has. The cobalt blue finish is stunning. The block inlays, chrome, and tinted neck are also really nice touches. It does have some hum, especially when the active preamp is on, but I find that as long as both pickups are on and I don't stand next to devices with strong electromagnetic fields, it's negligible, or just absent. Everything about the construction of the bass is very sturdy and precise. I noticed it has some slight neck-dive when I have it slung high, but I generally play with a long strap, and it doesn't seem to have any real neck-dive when slung at, or below, my waist. Overall, this is my ideal bass. If I ever become a famous/successful bass player, this is the bass that I want people to think of when they think of me.

A great versatile bass

I purchased the bass because of the great looks and reasonable price and I love it! I have used it for tracking at the studio many times even though I own quite a few more expensive basses. I really like the variety of tones you can get with the different pickup configurations and using the active EQ circuit allows you get tones into the Musicman territory. I has a lot of bite to it when the EQ is in passive mode, great for rock. My only gripe is the EQ controls feel like they are either all the way up or not on a t all, not much room in between. Still, this a great bass that can cover a variety of sounds.

Great bass! And it's blue!

First off I played in an Indie rock/Post-hardcore/Post-rock band (think Brand New, O'brother, Thrice, Neutral Milk Hotel, Bon Iver, and Now Now). That should give you an idea where I'm coming from.
I played an earlier model of this when it was only being offered in red or white at my local music. It sounded fantastic. I usually prefer Precision Basses but this bass held it's own. I also prefer passive electronics but I found the active option to sound really great. It was punchy and had just enough low end without sounding booming. The neck feels great as well and is similar to a Jazz Bass neck. The body design is really cool. This bass is definitely in the running when I need another and I will search out the blue. A friend of mine also owns one of these and it sounds great in his band.
