Amateur Blues Alternative Rock Punk

When I got back into guitar about three years ago I bought a Modern Player Marauder because it had a wealth of features which suited, looked great and was really well priced. I thought the many single coil options and the triplebucker would keep me occupied for quite a while and they did but I didn’t account for how much I would enjoy the Jazzmaster pickup in the neck. I always thought that Jazzmasters looked really beautiful and after about a year of the Marauder and really getting back into playing guitar I got one.

I have now had the Jazzmaster for almost a year and I am in love with it. The pickups are amazing and I can get everything out of them through either my DSL50 or my Blues Junior III. I really like the tremolo arm and the sheer scope of tone you can get out of these things is incredible.

Plenty of discussion to be had with the improved bridge. For me it is right on the money.

The tone is amazing from this guitar. I am very happy with this purchase

The tone, man. Oh my god the tone.
The amount of variety of sounds this thing can produce is just astounding. They've updated the pickups and these ones are a little hotter than it's predecessors, which opens up more possibilities for those of us inclined to play a little dirtier. On my little 15w valve amp it really does push it into that sweet drive nice and comfortably with the volume cranked. Compared to my friend's jazzmaster, it seems as though the slightly higher output gives it a real warm depth and a nice tight responsiveness.

For the jazz purists out there, it's still totally appropriate. The higher output doesn't mean you're gonna be messing up all the frequencies, it just means that when you take a solo you have that real nice extra presence to get people's attention.
It's also nice that the jazzmaster has still kept it's roots in jazz, because the rhythm circuit in this is spot on. Particularly on higher voicings, it blends all the notes together really nicely so it's perfect for a funky little vamp and other times when you need to kick back a little.

People have for years been complaining of the stock bridges on jazzmasters, and understandably so. They're just silly. You couldn't pick hard at all or the strings would just pop out of the saddles. And trust me when I say you don't want that to happen mid song on stage.
So what did Fender do? They listened.
They went ahead and put a TOM bridge in its place. Good times!
..or perhaps not.
It's not a real TOM, it's fender's own design, and to be honest, it could have been designed a whole lot better. The saddles seem too small for the bridge, so they rattle like mad. Not good fender.
But, thankfully the bridge pins are the same distance apart as on a standard TOM, so it'd probably be worth forking out a little extra for a proper TOM and you'll have a massive smile on your face and a wicked instrument in your hands.
Go on. You know you want to.

Amateur Alternative Rock Pop Rock

I recently purchased this guitar from GuitarGuitar in Glasgow. I went in with a list of Fender guitars to try out including the Fender Classic Player Telecaster and Jaguar among others. I played this guitar first and was taken aback by how smooth the tone was which is ideal for me as I love to use delay to create really delicate and textured tones. This was ideal for me... Putting it onto the overdrive channel I felt that I could really get some diverse tones, maybe not as much as the other guitars in this price range but for me the clean channel was the thing I was most interested in. Playing the other guitars I just felt that the Jazzmaster suited my style much more than the other guitars. Do not get me wrong the other guitars were great they just were not for me. This guitar would certainly be limited for the likes of hard rock and heavy metal however for your alternative rock, stadium rock as well as the likes of your jazz this guitar is perfect.

Solidly made as you would expect by fender, from being used to playing different guitars in my time for years the way i always played has resulted in me often flicking the pickup switch by accident but slowly correcting it! 6 years of a habit is hard to break!

A few minor changes would help

I always wanted a Jazzmaster ever since was a kid and played one a few times in a Surf Band. I bought a new CPJM about a year ago after selling my Strat. The reason for the change was because I didn't like the Strat tone as well for my music, mostly Jazz and vintage Rock. The Jazzmaster does both very well, maybe not as good for Hard Rock or Heavy Metal or some other stuff but very well for most music. I like the pickups and think they sound better than my Strat ever did through my Deluxe Reverb. I really like the upper bout switching and controls I use it all the time to switch from a warm Jazzy tone to a raunchy Blues or Country Twang, The CPJM pickups can cut as good as the P-90's on my Les Paul and still have that Fender snap, almost Tele like. I did a slight adjustment on a few of the pickup's pole screws, but they seem good where they were set. I did raise the bridge pickup a tad mostly on the higher strings, which helped balance them better with the lower strings .

Here's a few things Fender should do to improve on a great guitar.

Replace the tune-a-matic bridge with a roller bridge. I did this and it made a big difference and got rid of a string buzz on the "B" string.

Make more room on the tremolo for the string ball ends so they don't hit the tremolo base plate. I took the tremolo off and filed off about 1/32" on the back side of the base plate to solve that problem, now it works like it should.

Also I like the screw in tremolo arm, a good improvement, if you put a small spring down the hole (Fender Sells them) it helps keep the are where you put it.

Best Jazzmaster for the price, BUT

This was my first fender, and my first guitar with single coils, so it was a big jump for me. I had to order it in without actually ever playing one, which I never do, I always play everything I look at buying. When it came in and I played it I found the bridge pickup to be a bit too treble-y, but after some EQ and pickup hight adjustments it all worked out. It did need a bit of a set up when it came in, so I had our local repairman set it up with 11s, and take a look at the bridge which can be a bit buzzy due to the the saddle screws being a bit too small and can rattle, but a few drops of glue, wax, or adding plumbers tape to the threads can solve that. I also found if you plan on puting on 10s, or higher, and/or you are a heavy handed player the low E and sometimes the A string can jump out of the saddle, so you might have to file them a bit. Also due to the fact the tunomatic is straight and the the fretboard is a 9.5inch radius, the string height can be tricky especially if you like it a bit lower. If you set it to not buzz at D and G string, then you might find the E strings are a bit to high, so its either angled one side high, or have both a bit high, but its not that bad. I was planning on investing in a mastery bridge so it's not too big of a deal. But overall, this is in my opinion the best Jazzmaster, due to its price and quailty. It's one of the few Jazzmaster that is spec'd to the same as a vintage JM, and you dont have to drop 2 or 3 grand to get it, and I love it, it's my main guitar now. If you want a more vintage sounding grab some duncan antiquities, but aside from the small bridge problems, it is an amazing guitar, the trem is amazing, can't make it go out of tune even if I try, the circuits are awesome for a variety of tones, from surf to rock, grunge, to jazz. Amazing buy, I can see why people who have them, love them.

Upon picking up this Jazzmaster, you just get the feeling of greatness. It has great playability, great tone, comfortable neck and balance, ease in changing pickups and a reliable tremolo which holds tune no matter how excitedly you yank on it. It's safe to say that within the first five minutes of picking this guitar up and playing around with it, I was in love. The shape, the color, the tone and that famous Fender pop and twang were waiting to be flaunted and rocked. I would recommend this to anyone that likes this shape. Its bright and crunchy with that jazz rhythm circuit just one movement away allowing the quick succession of tones. From poppy and really trebly, to the soft and sweet in an instant.

The only small thing (that I probably wouldn't change anyway) that I can find is that if you are a slapper and a popper, due to the small inlets on the bridge (which allows for a lot of the tone) if you get a bit excited and slap and pop it too hard the Low E is prone to falling off the bridge. However, with normal use this guitar is just beautiful.

Professional Alternative

I got a black one about a month ago. I was impressed with the thought that had gone into its design. The trem arm is threaded so it doesn't fall out and it falls into the perfect position when fully tightened. The main vol and tone knobs are mounted flush to the scratchplate - I don't think much dust will get in, the bridge faces the wrong way which makes it a bit easier to get to the screws and the strings never fall off. There were no problems with the upper vol and tone controls. Top marks for sound, looks and playability.

I bought this guitar 5 years ago. I always wanted a Jazzmaster. I am very glad I bought it. I got a great price on it. I am a Tele guy, I use a Strat for an alternatve, The Jazzmaster replaced my Strat. I love the look and feel of this guitar. The neck is super comfortable, the finish is top notch. Hardware is great. Tuning stablitiy is excellent, I can do all sorts of surfy dives and it stays in tune. Out of the box the setup on the body was fantastic, The neck needed some serious adjustments. I have a certain setup i like and I have to do everyone of my guitars like that. Great guitar and I am really glad I bought it

I will start off with a negative. The retail price, too expensive, esp compared to the great quality new Squier VM range. However, I got mine at a very good price, so I'm happy.
I spent about an hour when I first got it, understanding the trem and setting the neck up. I was ok anyway, but I wanted to take it apart and look at the build quality (as I build guitars). Everything was great. I set the action quite high (which is not what I usually do) as I found it so easy to play. The neck is fantastic (a bit like an SG neck) wide and flat but with a fairly medium profile. Frets are great (medium jumbo) and this made it so much nicer than the vintage or original jazzmasters that had 7in radius and tiny frets.
This is the first jazzmaster I've owned (had lots of strats and teles), but I am amazed at the tone. I guess the slightly hotter pickups help to give you a bit more range/variation, but it still has the lovely surfy, vintage twang and shimmering sustain. I've tried American JMs and this Mex is better; nicer to play, greater range of tone, tune omatic bridge (so no slipping strings), angled neck etc.
Purists will hate the modifications, but I genuinely think this has improvements and not faddy modern changes. Most touring players will have to swap their bridge for the mustang or tune omatic anyway. So if you are going to play (outside of the bedroom or studio) this is ideal and robust.
I have the black finish and I think it looks stunning. You can always change pickguards/pickup covers with the black and get lovely different looks if you wish.
The only slight thing I'd change would be to use a thinner vintage tint lacquer on the neck and not the thick gloss, it's nice to feel a bit more woodiness or matt in your hand. But I shall prob sand it back and respray in time.
As for now, I'm totally smitten and it is my fav guitar (out of six). If it cost £400 retail, it would be perfect.

Well, I have had my share of Teles and Strats. But the Classic Player Jazzmaster Special(my second one) was the first Fender to NOT be one of the big two. The first thing I noticed was how much longer it felt. Be aware, you will need to get a specially fitted case for this if you want to upgrade from the gigbag that it comes in. A very different feeling guitar. I like it set up with very low action and once that was done, I couldn't put it down. The variety of tones available with the rhythm/lead switch and all those tone knobs gave it some real charm. I haven't managed to pull it out of tune with the sort of unwieldy vibrato bar, but it feels fairly solid. For a little taste of retro new wave and surf, save your money and buy this version of a classic. It's very well put together and sounds great!

I give the Classic Player a 2 star rating. I like the features, playability, and sound of the guitar. The item that wasn't asked about was quality control. I ordered a Jazzmaster to try something different. I had never played one. When the guitar came I was disappointed that the rhythm circuit didn't work correctly. As you started to roll off the volume it would get quiet and then get loud again. It would never go off completely and the tone control did nothing. I took it back to the store and a new was sent. The new one arrived and it had the same problem. The guitars were only 7 numbers apart on the serial number.
Our local dealer is not an authorized service center, so both guitars have been sent to a repair center. It's been nearly 2 months since the first one arrived and I still don't have a Jazzmaster to play. The dealer recently got a Squier J Mascis Jazzmaster and when I tried it, it worked perfectly. This added to my disappointment; especially since the Classic Player is more expensive.
There is a lot to like about the Jazzmaster, but my first impression was not love at first sight. I expected a lot more from Fender; even a Mexican Fender and their quality control.
On an aesthetic note, and I may be splitting hairs, I thought the overall sunburst finish was too dark. I see Jazzmasters from the 60's with a very distinct color separation. I would think as a "Classic" Player would try to be more like the originals. Now with that said, the fit and finish was great. I just thought it to be too dark.
