More about Kurt Cobain Road Worn® Jaguar®

One of Fender's most distinctive signature models ever is the Kurt Cobain Jaguar® guitar –meticulously modeled on the battered and highly unusual 1965 Jaguar that Cobain wielded during the heady early-'90s era when Nirvana ruled rock and led a musically stunning and culturally subversive movement.

Fender craftsmen have reproduced Cobain's battle-hardened Left-Handed Jaguar down to the last unusual detail, including its worn finish, dual humbucking pickups and unique electronics and controls (which were already in place when Kurt acquired the guitar in summer 1991).

Unique features include an alder body with Road Worn® aged finish and hardware treatment, bound fingerboard with pearloid dot markers, Stratocaster® headstock shape with 1950s-style "spaghetti" logo, DiMarzio® humbucking DP103 PAF 36th Anniversary neck pickup and DP100 Super Distortion bridge pickup, triple knurled "chrome-dome" knob configuration (volume-volume-tone), three-position toggle switch, black chrome Adjusto-Matic™ bridge and Gotoh® sealed tuners. Available in right- and left-handed versions.

Accessories include a black textured vinyl hard-shell case and an exclusive Fender Kurt Cobain book with photos and commentary by Charles Peterson and an insightful interview with Nirvana guitar tech Earnie Bailey.

Looks and sounds awesome!

(4.0)
JohnAM on October 9, 2014 (updated October 9, 2014)
Alternative Rock Pop Rock

Looks fantastic and now plays beautifully - I'm a beginner but my tutor too is blown away by it, even though he plays r handed;) It's an aggressive sound - the tone is '11' on the dial! - but it also has some amazingly smooth tones that really surprise you.
The one big problem is that the original set up was truly disgraceful, I used an expert luthier who was amazed how poor it was, the fret edges literally cut my fingers (i was over 100 miles from nearest UK stockist so i bought online and didnt try it beforehand).
These faults are absurd as the craftsmanship of the body and the metalwork is fantastic, it's got so much character - but it just wasn't finished properly. It's now perfect (after spending £120/$190) but the number of problems from setup are simply not acceptable, effectively adding over 10% to the cost. If you can do your own setup then obviously not such an issue and still worth it. Looks so beautiful I cant regret the cost!

A Great Gift

(5.0)
guido on August 1, 2014 (updated August 4, 2014)
Blues R&B Alternative Rock Pop Rock Heavy Metal

My 47th birthday is in a couple of days. Been using Fender gear since I was 15. I am mainly a Tele and Jazzmaster player. I always wanted a Jaguar. 2 years ago I got the Squier VM Jaguar. I have it set up well and it plays and sounds great. I was given this guiatr for my birthday. It was given to me by a family member, who thought this would be a better guitar than my Squier version. I was floored by this gift. I thought it was great. I really love my Squier version and this new although used Jag will be played and loved too. I bought the Squier due to the price and quality and it won't be my main axe. This road worn model, is very well built and it is perfecly set up. Feels like an old perfect pair of Levi Jeans. My only complaint, I am a purist type player, I don't like the humbuckers and this guitar doesn't get my 60s Surf Tone. Guitar is perfect other than that. I have ordered Fender Vintage single coil pickups a new pickguard and pots to put it back where it was originally. I feel funny about this due to it being a Kobain model, but I would never use it in its stock form. The bridge is excellent. Anxious to get it retro fitted. I would not have bought this guitar but as a gift it was awesome.

Great guitar - HORRIBLE (or no) setup!

(4.0)
dreambrother37 on July 24, 2014 (updated August 7, 2014)
Blues R&B Funk Alternative Rock Classic Rock Pop Rock Heavy Metal Rap Reggae/Ska

I've been a huge Nirvana fan since the early '90s and my main guitars have always been Jags/Jazzmasters, so when this guitar came out I obviously had to have one.
Anyway.. I really did my homework on this guitar so I was aware of the likelihood of this being a great guitar with a horrible setup job. Mine was no different. I was immediately stunned by the craftsmanship and wonderful relic job. I LOVE that they didn't overdo the finish "checking" in the nitro finish like a lot of relicers do. It doesn't have that "razor bladed" look that a lot of false checking has. Now then, when I went to PLAY the thing I was very disappointed. I know that a lot of guitars need a couple of tweaks after being shipped, but this wasn't the case with the Jag. It just simply was NOT setup. It wasn't even close to being intonated (all the saddles were as far forward on the bridge as possible). I couldn't even play a G barre chord at the third fret without it being out of tune! The action was absurdly high. The high E saddle had a terrible buzz that had to be filed out with a special file that luckily I have. The nuts on the tuners were extremely loose. The trem system needed to be setup. Considering the great relic job and the great story behind the guitar, I think that $1300 is a pretty good deal, BUT a $1300 dollar guitar should still be playable right out of the box. Luckily for me, I am a professional guitar tech so doing the setup just took a part of my evening to do. However, MOST people that buy this guitar are not techs and would have to take it to their local dealer and pay to have it fixed. NOT COOL, FENDER! I feel like these guitars should come with a gift certificate for a free setup! :P

Disappointed In Quality Control

(2.0)
DisappointedInFender on March 20, 2014 (updated March 22, 2014)
Alternative Rock

After special ordering and purchasing this guitar I brought it home to find that it had a terrible or no set up at all... All of the bridge saddles were set to the very front of the bridge. After fixing this/setting the intonation I found that the low E string had a buzz when played open. I temp fixed this by placing a small piece of paper in the slot of the nut. I have now taken the guitar in to be professionally set up were they have also discovered that the neck needs a shim....

Does this sound like the kind of quality control a company should be using on guitars that cost $1,399.99 street value?!

You will need to spend even more money on this thing to be set up even though it is new.

Fender Jaguar KC

Beginner Blues Alternative Rock Classic Rock Pop Rock Heavy Metal Punk

I finally have the Jaguar KC! I wanted this guitar since day 1 of its release in 2011.
I finally saved enough to buy this month and i can tell you it was well worth the waiting— omg this axe is amazing!!
It looks awesome and the tone is godlike! It feels and plays really well.
The guitar is so well made and plays so comfortably, and the sound is just mindblowing, that for the price it is a real steal.
Being a Nirvana fan as long as i can remember, having a really good signature model is just amazing this is my nr1 collector item.
The backplate is such a nice touch by Fender...Thank you Fender for making this possible !!

Superb Jag

Semi-Professional Blues Jazz Alternative Rock Pop Rock Heavy Metal Reggae / Ska Punk

I had a tough choice when originally picking this guitar but boy am I glad I did! Being a Nirvana fan this guitar already appealed to me. Plus, it's a jag, which I had wanted to move up to from a strat, and it's got
Humbuckers. I love the worn finish and that there isn't a formal signature on the guitar. It truly feels like a pawn shop '65 jag. It has wonderful playability and the tone is amazing especially on the middle position. The shorter scale gives the strings a nice slinky feel to them and overall I love this guitar! The only issue I have would be that the rhythm circuit is extremely quiet but other than that it is worth the money!

A must buy for any Nirvana fan

Like the title says, if you love the Nirvana sound, go buy this thing. Great looking and sounds even better. I was super excited when I first read about this one, ordered it that day. Price was a bit high for a Mexican guitar, but i have to say that the quality was better then other Mexican builds I've played, mostly I think it's the pickups that make the difference. Setup was off from the factory, that's pretty normal though and easy to fix. Also I was glad to see they put a tune-o-matic instead of the normal jag bridge so you can actually play this guitar pretty hard. As for tone, just listen to any Nirvana album you can pretty much make it sound like that.

The Authentic Nirvana sound

(4.0)
utddvl on February 18, 2013
Semi-Professional Blues Alternative Rock Pop Rock Heavy Metal Folk Reggae / Ska Punk

The Fender Kurt Cobain Jaguar is widely seen as a niche guitar - a homage to the late Kurt Cobain targeted at the many guitarists he inspired to pick up a guitar and learn to play. I am one of those guitarists who, in my early teens, did exactly that. Twenty years later Fender have accurately recreated what some may say is the guitar Kurt was most recognised for using (especially in the Nevermind era).

At just over £1000 (GBP) it's certainly not the cheapest guitar you could buy, but in my humble opinion, it's worth saving for. The guitar it's self is a modified '65 Jaguar - It's had the single coils replaced with Dimarzio Humbuckers, it's been wired to incorporate a 3 way toggle switch, an additional volume knob and a 'Adjust-O-Matic bridge.

Due to the two different Humbuckers (Dimarzio super distortion in the bridge and Dimarzio PAF in the neck position) the contrast in tone available is quite large. In the neck position you can achieve a soft, warm, well balanced tone. However this guitar really comes to life when switching to the bridge humbucker. At the flick of a switch you'll be churning out loud, rip saw, sharp and punchy tones. To those of you who are nirvana fans - think 'School' or 'Drain You' from the 'Muddy banks of the wishkah' live album.

The inclusion of the adjust-o-matic brige with ensure there is no string slippage from the saddles - this can be a common problem with the classic floating bridge found on regular Jaguars. Especially for guitarists with an 'aggressive' playing style.

The body is covered in chips, scratches, dings and paint chips which Fender claim to be accurate to Kurts original guitar. It's an aquired taste, but this particular guitar wouldn't look 'right' if it was shiny and new, due to the nature of what it is - a recreation of Kurt Cobains iconic guitar.

Some players may find the jumbo frets to cause intonation problems. I had some trouble with pressing down on the G string too hard caused the notes to go sharp. This was mostly resolved by upping the string guage to 11s (it ships with 10s) and a giving it a good set up. The other issue I had was that the plate on the lower 'horn' (with the toggle switch) had been installed upside down, so I had to unscrew it, rotate it 180 degrees and screw it up nice and tight again.

I'd also like to be clear that this guitar is easily worthy of being used in all forms of music, not just rock /punk/ grunge/ metal ect. As certain YouTube videos will testify. OK, maybe not ALL types, but what's the harm in trying right? From something old comes something new...

All in all, a great guitar. Very versatile, great sounding, fun to play! If you're a Nirvana fan it's a must have. If you're looking for something a little different I would definitely tell you to consider this guitar.

I give it 4/5.
