I had never really been interested in mandolin, however shifts in my musical tastes made me realise how nice they sound and how they can be used in a contemporary context. Upon seeing this beauty on the Fender website I was interested in giving it a shot. I've been playing guitar for over 10 years, so wanted to get something above entry level, without spending a hell of a lot of money. The lovely team who run the UK Fender Facebook page tracked one down in London for me, which I went to try out, only knowing a couple of mandolin chords and one riff. I fell in love pretty much instantly and returned a week later, credit card in hand to make it my own.
The setup was decent in the shop, however I noticed it was a bit high the further up the neck I went. A quick setup by a luthier later and it came back playing like an absolute dream! Sure, it's not the most expensive mandolin out, and the shape may be one to divide opinion, but I'm super happy I picked this baby up. The only thing I've found is that I've noticed a ground hum at the last couple of gigs I've played. I'm not sure if this is an issue with dirty power at the venue or if the electronics need a once over. I must stress that this has only been an issue at the last 2 gigs, before then it was fine. If anyone can recommend a small (non-rack) power conditioner, I'd love to give that a try...
I run my mandolin into a Radial ToneBone Pz-Pre, which I also use for my acoustic guitar. For a lower price point instrument, I was very pleasantly surprised at the acoustic tone as well. I would recommend this to anyone who wants a no-frills mandolin with a pickup that's designed for a great stage sound.
