Marcus Miller Jazz V looks w/o breaking the bank!

(5.0)
rbanyaga on April 20, 2013
Semi-Professional R&B Funk Jazz Heavy Metal

I've owned several 4 string basses and my #1 has always been my Fender MIM Standard Jazz, so I was very happy to see an affordable Squier alternative. I tried many basses but kept coming back to a jazz! After watching and reading tons of favorable reviews of the Vintage Modified series especially the Jazz, I tried the 4 string version and loved the sound and feel! Once I tried the 5 string, I knew that was the one! I ordered a new one but that was backordered from the factory for quite awhile, after checking around I found a close to mint used one and snapped it up! Out of the box she sounds great! No need to adjust action, intonation or add shielding! I can't believe the lack of buzz! I am so impressed with the build quality and sound of this instrument! From deep to growl and everything in between, this Bass feels and sounds amazing plugged in direct or amped and even unplugged! It totally has that Classic jazz scooped mid with both pickups full up. I can't say enough good things about this instrument! I just wished I purchased one sooner! I'd highly recommend this for a 1st time 5 string as a main axe or a backup. I put alot of extra upgrades into my MIM Jazz to make it sound as good as this bass does out of the box. There's nothing I can foresee changing on this Bass except for the string tree and possibly the bridge. If you're a gear snob go ahead and get a high end bass, but afterwards try one of these out and you'll think again. Thanks Squier for making a killer looking, sounding and feeling instrument!

Great Bass For The Money

(4.0)
grho50 on February 22, 2013 (updated February 24, 2013)
Semi-Professional R&B Classic Rock Country

I purchased this bass to use as a backup. The tone was pretty good, but I wanted a fuller sound so I changed out all the electronics. Sounds really good now. You can get a buzz when the two volume knobs are out of sync.
Fit and finish is pretty good. I did have some issues with the string tree and control knobs. I replaced the string tree with a couple of round ones and the knobs were replaced with larger ones to fit the CTS pots I placed in the bass.
Playability is surprisingly good. Better than I expected on a bass in this price range. The action was low when I received the bass and I only had to raise a couple of the strings just a hair and set the intonation, then it was good to go.
The neck is great. The satin finish is smooth and fast. The block inlays and neck binding look nice.
I rated the features of this bass a 3 because of the string tree and control knobs. I rated the tone a 3 as well, but that's not really too bad for a bass in this price range.

Great Bass!!!

Amateur Gospel

Have owned many basses over the years and this is one of the best. The pickups are really great. I prefer them to my '75 Jazz. I needed a 5 string bass for the band I'm in and this one is great. The action was terribly high at first but after a change of strings and some adjustment by a great tech it is easily my favorite bass. The neck may be a bit large for some but I love it. The unfinished neck feels so good I don't think I could ever be comfortable with anything else. I would really like to get the 4 string version some day! FUN to play! I play contemporary Christian music and the bass works great at low volume rooms and of course wonderful at louder rooms.
