Squier is definitely making great strides to produce quality instruments at affordable prices. I recently bought the J Mascis Jazzmaster, and it's so amazing that I instantly became a Squier lover. That said, when I first laid eyes on this beautiful bass I knew I wanted it.
I love Lake Placid Blue, and the painted headstock makes this bass stand out visually. It's basically an homage to the '66 Fender Jazz Bass that runs over $2000. The mint/off white pick guard looks so good against the blue paint as well. The fretboard is of fine quality with rich dense brown hues, unlike the dry faded cheap looking wood of older Squiers.
When I plugged this bass in, I was thrilled to learn that the pickups are very responsive and the full range of tones are available, and just as you'd find in a MIM or MIA (made in Mexico/made in America) bass--both of which I also own so I know.
Opening my bass straight from the box, there was minor setup needed. I lowered the action and adjusted the saddle heights to be better action. Beyond that, I'll change the strings out and this thing will be ready for serious playing.
All in all, this is an incredible value and definitely comparable to MIM basses, and even some MIA jazz basses. My only real qualm is that the neck is coated in a thick layer of "gloss polyester". I would MUCH prefer the satin urethane neck which is smoother/faster to play on. I guess it's the cheaper option, helping to keep the price low.
This, hands down, has to be the coolest bass in the fleet. Lake Placid Blue with a matching headstock in the CV series. Mine is a factory 2nd, stamped "used". My question is "How???" It's perfect. Mine came with a quarter sawn flame maple neck and perfect action right out of the box. the tone?... You need nothing else. To put this instrument in a class for beginners & amatures is a vast understatement of all time. Fender USA & custom shop has shot themselves in the foot by letting this one out of the bag. This one is a gem.
