Oooh I played one the weekend, quite the guitar I can tell you now mate. I'd have bought it if I hadnt seen the vintage amplifiers section. The plexi got the better of me though.
Its certainly a lot darker than I expected. I haven't seen a picture of EC with his. I expected it to be like pewter. _________________

well, youve got an advantage over me as not only have i not seen the EC Grey in person i have not seen the pewter either. I had heard both colors were darker in person than in photos, of course. when i saw clapton earlier this year (with the grigio) it did look pretty dark - even under house lights.
interesting that you mention a difference when compared to pewter. TK had mentioned to me a couple times that unless he sees the two right next to each other, he never knows which is which on their own.
at least in photos, there seems to be something different to me in the grigio than the pewter...i dont know what it is but whatever 'it' is, is pratly responsibly for driving my preference.
did you happen to see the daphne also? |

[did you happen to see the daphne also?[/quote]......
My '89 Pewter is much lighter than the 'grey's, and somehow I was under the impression that the EC Grey and the Grigio were one and the same, only Fender wasn't using the Ferrari name for the paint. Perhaps I was wrong. I was also under the impression that you had finally bitten the bullet, given up on the greys, and placed an order. What's the story, Jerry? Are you planning two guitars now?
As for Daphne.....she's off and running with a Stratocaster to die for. I am reluctant to give you the details fearing that you will go out and succeed helping your analystmeet his/her anticipated annual earnings happen much sooner than December 31st.
Awaiting, with baited breath, your earliest possible reply.
(For the benefit of the folks in the wings.......sssshhh......I take the bet that when his guitar finally arrives, we'll be off and running with another. _________________ "I wish I was where I was, when I wished I was where I am now!" |

Mike, another question on the EC Masterbuilt. I see Wildwood does have quite a few in stock, but all are built by John Cruz. It was my understanding that Todd Krause built all the ones that Eric actually plays on stage, or am I wrong in that John build's Eric's personal guitars as well?
Can you also tell me what the difference is with the AAA Flamed Neck vs the Quarter Sawn Neck?
Thanks in advance. |

The former reflects the qualtiy of the grain pattern in the wood, the latter how the wood for the neck blank was cut from the log. Logs which are quartersawn are first cut into quarters length- wise and then each quarter is cut separataly alternating cuts from one face then the other.
Quartersawn wood is considered less subject to warpage or effects of shrinkage.
This 'wood' be something the detail manic Eric Johnson considered in designing his signature guitar.

Thanks Doc. Some of the young guys here won't understand, but for some of us older guys, I was a Patternmaker back 30+ years ago before everything went to computers. Hand selection of wood was extremely important to the quality and hardness of the patterns being made for use in the foundry. I have a great appreciation to wood selection and their purpose, thanks for taking the time to explain.
I see both types advertised on guitars, but never both on the same. Do they make AAA Flame that is quarter swan? Just curious.
Thanks again |

I don't find that combined on any of the guitars in the Wildwood catalog. I suppose it doesn't mean that the wood could not be cut in said fashion. The question remains with respect to doing so and still obtaining the kind of grain pattern one seeks in terms of esthetics in a AAA flame maple.
(Which, by the way, is bit too 'busy' a pattern for my taste')
I am not that much of a wood guru to offer any further observations. Perhaps others on the Forum who do quite a bit of guitar building might have more to offer.

planning at least 2 more guitars:)
but i have reserved one spot for that grey, whenever it ends up coming out.
i am no wood expert but in discussing my own neck options i was informed that there is nothing mutually exclusive about cut and figuring |
