Dinosaur Jr.’s J Mascis made an appearance at Fender headquarters today in Scottsdale, Ariz. Unfortunately I wasn’t able to get a photo to post from his actual visit, but Mascis took a tour of the building and then jammed for a bit in our sound room.

He’ll be playing later tonight with Dinosaur Jr. at the Marquee Theatre in Tempe, Ariz.

A Visit from Nils Lofgren

lofgrenblog.jpg

While home in Arizona on a four-night break from the “Working on a Dream” tour, guitarist Nils Lofgren of Bruce Springsteen & the E Street Band dropped by Scottsdale headquarters.

“We are right in the city but we have this 1935 adobe home with a lot of property and it’s beautiful,” he says of his home of 13 years with wife Amy. “We’ve got a dog park for our six dogs and a cat. We love animals. Amy is a professional cook. She’s a master chef; that’s her gift. So there’s always great food and we just enjoy spending time at home together.”

This was my first opportunity to personally meet the Fender-wielding artist, although as I tell him, I was front and center at his Super Bowl press conference back in February.

“I wanted to tell a story about Bruce that day, but I didn’t get the chance,” he says.

“Well, I’ll tell it for you in my blog,” I say.

And so he begins, “My wife Amy brought John Madden to a show in Chicago one time. He didn’t want to come but she talked him into it and he loved it. He went back and visited Bruce before the show and when he came out, he told us that he felt like he was just with a Hall of Fame quarterback on the eve of a Super Bowl because of Bruce’s intensity. I thought that was pretty incredible that he got that impression of Bruce. It reminded me that what we do is basically playing a Super Bowl for a hometown crowd, except that we are guaranteed a victory; we’re just working on a point spread.”

I guarantee him that the media contingency covering the Super Bowl would have loved that anecdote.

About a dozen shows are left to be played before Lofgren returns back home to Arizona, where he plans to begin work on a solo album and continue with his guitar school.

“There’s a beginner’s school and an intermediate school for guitar players on my website nilslofgren.com,” he says. “People always say, ‘Oh I’d love to play guitar for fun but I have no talent, no rhythm, I’m not allowed to. I’m always like, ‘Well, who told you that?’ They just got that impression. The point of my beginner’s school is you don’t need talent; you don’t need rhythm. If you love music and want to play guitar for fun, I feel like I can help you do that. It is hard work and frustrating for your fingers because it’s like gymnastics for your hands. So I show people things to do with one finger every lesson that require no practice and no talent. You’ve got to do the fun stuff more than the hard stuff so that you don’t get frustrated and walk away. I think you should always walk away after doing the fun stuff. End on a good note.”

So get started on the fun now at Lofgren’s website and for more on Lofgren, check out this story on Fender News

The Sounds Drop By

thesounds.jpg

Three-fifths of Swedish new wave band The Sounds visited Fender headquarters in Scottsdale, Ariz., on Friday afternoon.

Here’s what I’m calling “B-Side,” basically some quick questions and short answers from guitarist Felix Rodriguez, bassist Johan Bengtsson and keyboardist/guitarist Jesper Anderberg.

If you had to switch to a different instrument, what would it be?

Johan: Guitar. I’d like to play keyboard but I’m not good enough. I have to practice more.

Jesper: Since I just recently switched to guitar, I’d pick drums or bass next.

Felix: Drums

If you could jam with one artist, dead or alive, who would it be?

Johan: Jimi Hendrix, specifically I’d like to have been part of 1969 Live at the Fillmore East.

Jesper: Neil Young

Felix: Brian May from Queen

What was the first album you ever bought?

Johan: I got a Jimi Hendrix album from my dad when I was super little.

Jesper: I don’t remember what I bought myself, but the first album I asked for was Europe, The Final Countdown.

Felix: Europe, The Final Countdown

What is your guilty pleasure?

Johan: Roxette, “Must Have Been Love”

Jesper: Europe, Final Countdown

Felix: I still listen to Europe!

What’s the biggest misconception you run across about Sweden?

Johan: People think it’s Switzerland, not Sweden.

Jesper: That every girl is hot, that we only eat meatballs and that it’s always dark.

Felix: That everyone is so nice. That’s not true. We’re nice, but not everyone.

Most bizarre/interesting thing that’s been tossed up on stage?

Johan: There’s not so much underwear as you think there would be. Nothing crazy really. Maybe cigarettes.

Jesper: Swedish flags, which is kind of nice.

Felix:  Sometimes people throw their beer bottles. That’s not so fun. But they seem to like us, so maybe that’s their way of saying they appreciate us.

Musical path most influenced by…?

Johan: I found an acoustic guitar  in the basement when I was about 10 and I just started playing and have been playing since.

Jesper: ‘80s music

Felix: My brother, because he taught me how to play the guitar.

After touring this summer with No Doubt and Paramore, the Sounds are now headlining their own tour in support of new album Crossing the Rubicon. Catch these guys live tonight at the Marquee Theatre in Tempe, Ariz., or elsewhere along their fall tour.

Here’s a quick video of the guys as they test out some new instruments and amps.

The Chuck Hall Band Plays Sweden

challband.jpg

The Chuck Hall Band, featuring longtime popular Phoenix-area blues artist and Fender’s very own guitar amplifier product manager Chuck Hall, drummer Ron James and another Fender employee in SWR marketing manager and bassist John Willis, recently took part in a two-week tour in Sweden.

The Chuck Hall Band played 11 shows in 13 days, including a show at Rockland, a nightclub specializing in rock and metal in Sala, Sweden, and a performance at Crescendo (see above), a community arts theatre in Norrköping, Sweden.

Here’s Willis (left) and Hall (right) onstage at Rockland.
