Vans Warped Tour

Michael Schulz of our artist relations team attended the Warped Tour at Cricket Pavilion in Phoenix, Arizona on June 30.

There to schmooze with some of the bands that Fender works with NOFX, Bad Religion, Civet, 3OH!3, Dear and the Headlights, After Midnight Project, Saosin, Underoath, Say Anything, Thrice, TAT, TSOL, Sing It Loud – Schulz also took a bunch of photos.

Check them out below, along with his narrative.

Vans Warped Tour

It was unbelievably hot out, 110 degrees I believe, and I’m actually still sun burnt from it. For those of you who have not spent time in Phoenix before in the summer, let’s just say I spent a $140 on water that day, and still probably should have downed some more.

The Warped Tour features more than 50 bands, so there were about four or five different stages setup to accommodate everyone. Throughout the day, there were various types of music blasting from the separate stages.

As well as great music, there were several side attractions. Record labels and bands set up their own tents where you could listen to their music and purchase CD’s, while other vendors set up concessions and merchandise tents. And for those that needed some shade, they could find refuge under the Rock Band tent.

I ran into a lot of old friends, and met a lot of new friends throughout the day, which was a great opportunity to catch up with our FMIC bands and say hello….

(Chris was kind enough to share his password for their tour bus with me. I think it saved my life because I was severely dehydrated and needed a cool spot to take a quick break. THANKS CHRIS!)

 Another view

She’s in a 3-piece band and she played guitar (white Olympic Strat) and sang – she’s unbelievable! She tore the Warp Tour apart!!

The heat didn’t stop the Civet ladies from putting on a great show. Suzi Homewrecker from Civet tore it up on her lefty Silver Falcon.

Odds & Ends

Anthrax bass player Frank Bello has generously agreed to share stories from his time on the road this summer with the thrash metal band on Fender.com. Bello started off last week with an update from Europe, and complaints about their portable toilets. He’s back again this week with gripes about their tour bus, which broke down in the middle of nowhere. In other words, touring isn’t so glamorous!

Check out his latest journal entry by clicking here.

Another blog is on the horizon as AutoVaughn, winners of our Road Worn Competition, have agreed to share their road travels with us in “The Adventures of AutoVaughn.” Stay tuned for that one, and in the meantime, get to know more about the band in this in-depth feature story.

And in the latest and ever-changing MJ news… the King of Pop WILL NOT be buried at Neverland Ranch. Apparently Santa Barbara county officials could not find a timely way to circumvent legal restrictions governing burial at a private residence.

Through a publicist, the Jackson family released the following statement.

Contrary to previous news reports, the Jackson family is officially stating that there will be no public or private viewing at Neverland.

Plans are underway regarding a public memorial for Michael Jackson, and we will announce those plans shortly.”

Jackson’s 2002 will was also filed in a Los Angeles Court.  The Smoking Gun website has posted the will, which names his mother Katherine as guardian of his three children. He also nominates Diana Ross as a backup guardian in the event that Katherine is unable or unwilling to care for his children.

New Album Coming for Paramore

Paramore, a pop-punk quintet from Tennessee, recently announced that Brand New Eyes, their third studio album on Fueled by Ramen, will be released on Sept. 29.

Paramore’s Hayley Williams explained the meaning behind the title to MTV News, saying, “Basically, the concept is, ‘In order for our band to move on to whatever’s next — and also us personally, as individuals, in order to grow up — [we needed to start] seeing each other, seeing everything, in a whole new perspective. Just trying to let go of whatever we might have struggled with in the past and just see each other in a new way.”

The band’s previous album Riot! sold a million copies. Given the band’s rise in popularity since then, Brand New Eyes will likely be in serious demand., so you might want to go ahead and preorder your copy at paramore.net beginning July 7.

And if you just can’t wait to hear their new stuff, try catching them on tour this summer as the opening act for No Doubt.

Legendary rock guitarist Eddie Van Halen wed Janie Liszewski at his seven-acre estate in the hills above Studio City, Calif. on Saturday evening.

The Sonus Quartet performed Van Halen’s “When It’s Love” as the bride walked down the aisle.

Van Halen’s son, Wolfgang, stood in as best man for the 20-minute ceremony, which was officiated by brother Alex Van Halen, an ordained minister.
