Growing up you always saw people playing the P bass and my first bass was a black Squier P bass and i loved it. I played it for years without any repairs or difficulties. So when I saw the chance to get a 5 string P bass there was no waiting or thinking. As soon as i put it in my hands the neck felt perfect with the non glossy finish, and the tone was so mellow and deep that I took it right away.

Over the years I've been debating adding a drop D tuner or going with a 5 string, last year while on holiday down east I tried a black and white American standard V Precision with a maple fret board, always wanted a maple fret board, ( all my axes had or have rosewood ) ,always wanted a precision (own a jazz ) so this axe checked a lot of boxes. The neck finish is fantastic, the build quality is great, the tone is great, no issue withe low B string. Going to the 5 string was the right choice, love being able to grab the low D on the low B string, took a little while to make playing adjustments , but it was a positive challenge, love having the extra tool in the tool box if you know what I mean. The one thing I did change was the pick guard, the white just didn't do it for me, I found a black pearl pick guard for it, and it now looks as amazing as it sounds and plays. Hence my wife's new nick name for this bass, The Black Pearl.

In 2008 I purchased my first American Fender, an American Standard Jazz 5. It was a wonderful bass and I used it for several years but the tone wasn't what I was hearing in my head. I wanted a 5 string Precision but no one had one to try at the time so the Jazz came home with me. 3 years later I was able to try a 5 string Precision.
There it was, the sound in my head, the sound I was looking for. That bass came home with me or rather went straight to a gig. The bassist for the opening band said that my new Precision sounded awesome. I haven't used any of my other basses since, until this past February when I ordered another American Standard Precision 5 in Candy Cola.
These basses have a tone that sits exactly where bass should. String to string volume is consistant. B string seems focused. A fretted E on the B string sounds almost identical to an open E. The music our band plays requires me to play on the B string on almost every song so a good B string is very important.
Using two of the same basses live, one strung with flats and one strung with rounds, it's important that the output volume is the same. The soundman at our last gig said that both basses had the same output volume.
Plug in and play. Beautiful finish. Perfect tone. I love these basses.

I've been playing 5 string Jazz basses for about 20 years, but I always preferred the P-bass sound. Until recent years they didn't offer an American made P-bass 5 string.
So I bought a 2012 Candy Cola/Maple Fingerboard and the finish is excellent. I don't know why Fender didn't keep this color.
The bass plays very easy and the neck is smooth and fast.
The B string is a pleasant surprise. This bass has the best B string sound I've ever played.
Fit and finish is perfect.
The tone.....oh the tone is great. That good ole big bottom, thumpin' p-bass sound.
Our band averages 3 weekend gigs a month and I'll be using this bass as my main bass.
I rated this bass 5 stars across the board because I haven't found anything wrong with it.

I've been playing 5-string basses since they first came out, and missed my first P-Bass. I had a 5-String Deluxe Active Jazz Bass, which is a great bass in its own right, but I still missed my old P. I finally broke down and bought this one. After getting it and stringing it with D'Addario Chrome Flatwounds, well, let's just say I'm home, and home got a little bigger.
I've been playing in a classic rock cover band in bars around Denver for over 30 years, and this is the perfect bass for what I do. I only gave it a three for features because it is what it is, it's a P Bass! It's not supposed to be an all-trick pony. For what it does, it's a work horse that never gets tired.
They can bury me with this one, although they won't have to, because I know it will be standard issue equipment when I get to heaven.
