Professional bassists in all musical genres have relied on the Fender® Jazz Bass® guitar since its 1960 introduction for its rich tone and musical versatility. The Standard Jazz Bass V five-string model combines the best of old and new, with modern single-coil pickups, shielded body cavities, medium jumbo frets, vintage-style bridge, tinted neck with rosewood fretboard, three-ply parchment pickguard, '70s-style headstock logo and the added range of a low B string.

I am a guitar player converted to a bass player. I originally bought this guitar because the recognition it gets from bass players everywhere. I was also looking for a five string because I play with a guitarist that tends to drop tune regularly. The playability of this bass is fine. I also own a Music Man Bongo and as far as the physical setup goes the Fender is no better or worse than the Bongo.
Comparing the tone of the Bongo and this bass probably isn't fair, because they are at a completely different price point. But the pickups are very weak. When I started to inspect the build of this bass, I noticed that the alignment of the strings with the pole pieces of the pickups is really ridiculous. It almost looks like it has the wrong pickups installed. The picture shown of this bass on this ad is a good representation. The strings should be between the poles (centered) and they are not. I am curious how an engineer for a company of the size and reputation of Fender could turn out such a sloppy design. My first electric guitar was a Fender and it was awesome, but this one, not so much. I am now looking for pickups that will bring this thing to life, but because of the poor design, I am afraid that a blade design may be my only choice.

A five string Jazz Bass always has been my first love, and this bass is a perfect tool for stepping into the world of basslines. This Standard Jazz Bass V is totally a perfect choice for daily use, from your own bedroom, the cafe corner, until live at the stage. The tone itself is distinguishable, a timeless classic. Warm yet punchy when fingered, clear yet snappy when slapped. Not as great as its American brothers, but you will get so much for less bucks.
