Super-Sonic™ 100 Head

Model : 216210
$2,499.99MSRP

The Super-Sonic series: High-performance, no-nonsense tube amps that create unmistakable Fender clean tones and expressive modern high-gain tones without masking the tonal character of the player’s guitar. The new 100-watt Super-Sonic 100 Head contains several sonically versatile new features, including an Arena/Club switch that takes the power down to 25 watts (to preserve its great high-volume tube tone at lower “club gig” volume levels); a Notch Tune control that lets you move the midrange notch and fine-tune the distortion characteristics for a variety of American and British amp sounds; a rear-panel damping control that lets you select “normal,” “loose” or “tight” speaker response for sounds ranging from warm and loose to tight and focused; and the new Fender Automatic Bias control, which lets you easily set the output tubes to the recommended factory setting and to your preference of “hotter” or “cooler” bias with no need for meters or tools.

Other features include a Vintage channel for shimmering clean tone derived from Fender Twin Reverb® and Showman® amps or the thick, punchy sound of a 1960s-era Bassman amp®; a Burn channel for edgy breakup and distortion with variable compression, thickness and sustain; tube-driven Fender long-spring reverb; effects loop with level control that also works as a footswitch-operated boost; custom Schumacher transformers; and a choice of Black/Silver or Blonde/Oxblood cosmetic treatments. Mates perfectly with the Super-Sonic 100 412 Straight and Super-Sonic 100 412 Slant enclosures. Cover and pedalboard-friendly four-button footswitch included.

Super Sonic 100--almost perfect, almost

I've been a big follower and customer of the sonic line-up from Fender. In the past, I've owned a Pro-Sonic, Super-Sonic 60, and recently purchased the Super-Sonic 100. What I dig about this series is that it allows players to shape their sound without having to go DSP modeling. Tube/analog amps are much richer than DSP modelers to my ear.

I have to give huge kudos to the folks at Fender for adding some great improvements to the Sonic series with the 100 line. This amp features a bunch of new features to dial in even more sounds. The addition of the onboard spring reverb for the head is fabulous. The addition of a gain knob and midrange knob to the clean channel (showman/twin & bassman) are great and add so much more versatility to the amp. The addition of notch tuning to the burn channel is a huge improvement. Add the tube auto biasing and damping control are also very cool. Interestingly enough perhaps the most welcome feature is the switch on the back that lets you switch between 100W and 25W. the 60W amp was earsplittingly loud and many folks had theirs modified to lower the volume.

Though it certainly could be less expensive, the 100 is a vast improvement over the 60 (which was an improvement over the Pro-sonic). This a beautiful amp and recomend it highly if you have the means. I'm currently playing the head through a Marshall 4x12 Greenback cab or a 2x12 Jensens custom.

This amp is almost perfect. almost. What would make this perfect is if Fender added the tube driven vibrato channel (found in traditional Fenders). That would be a 10. (see details in the Overview section). I own a vintage '68 Showman with the vibrato wired to always be on. There is a certain richness this adds to the amp that the Super-Sonic 100's clean channel does not reproduce.
