Poor Man's Twin Reverb less tubes and vibrato

(5.0)
Glenn on May 17, 2013 (updated May 20, 2013)
Semi-Professional Country

Have recently bought this gem of a Twin, simple to use and great looking. Clean sounds are my cup of Tea as I play older country, rock and roll, rock-a-billy and '50s pop. I grew up with this music and it is my kind of music. My MIM FSR Ash teles and MIM Deluxe Lonestar guitars sound full and robust through this amp, sounds just like the old Twin Reverbs I had years back. It is straight forward easy to use, much lighter to lug around and puts out the typical Fender sound that has delighted audiences for years. I only use the clean channel so I'm sorry not to be able to review the drive sounds.
I hope it weathers over for many years but so far, I'm really a happy owner. Thanks Fender for the always great equipment.

My 212

I have had two of these amps. The first one after about three years began to cut off and on while playing, usually in hotter weather. I took it in to a repair shop and they sent it to Fender in Arizona. It was replaced by an identical model. The second lasted two years and began to have the same problem of cutting off and on at about 15 second intervals. Good thing it was not at a show.

When the amp is working I loved it. You can't beat that twin speaker sound for depth. I think the clean side was incredible and really voiced my Stratocaster. It also works really well with stomp boxes, I use all Boss pedals. Despite the problems I want another one. Great value amp with all the power you could ever need.

5 stars may at first seem a bit simple to give this amp. I mean after all, its effectively a loudness for cheap solid state amplifier? Well this is true but you have as it is never going to be going on tour with the bands selling out arenas or recording studios for grammy award winners, so there is no point comparing it to marshall and messa tube amps for tone and sound, you must compare it to its contemporaries. When you do this you see this is simply the best solid state amp money can buy. Hands down the best clean sound for an amp of this kind and it takes pedals extremely well meaning you can develop your sound once you have progressed from bedroom to band.
Yes it is annoying you can't use the just the speakers and attach a head, and yes the in built overdrive is a tad dry but isn't that what pedals are for anyway? The same goes for my case against modeling amps which always seem to leave you a little empty of a genuine sound and have no character of their own. Character is what makes me give this amp 5 stars, you will not find a better solid state clean sound and the classic looks do alot for me . This amp is the best in it's field and it makes you smile whilst encouraging to develop your own sound.
This amp wins , Simple.

This amp has many uses, I run a vocal mic(eq'ed) on input 1-Low imp. and my casio keyboard on input 2 both on the clean channel and control the keyboard volume from the keyboard. The volume is set at 5 on the amp. Yes this amp is plenty loud and I have a Marshall MG100HDFX to compare it to, sooo!!! Yes it really should have a headphone jack, and the power switch could be on the front. Great effects loop is killer in my opinion, nice integration for external effects!! I have used it as a guitar amp and a P.A. GREAT Amp in my opinion!!!!

This amp has it all. Great tone for whatever I play and POWER to spare. From jazz and blues to full on metal! It never fails to surprise and at a great price.

A lot of bang for the bucks.

I have had this amp for a while. It is plenty loud, but I wish the volume controls were a bit more responsive; when I dial in from 1 to 2 it is loud! I have to roll off significantly on the instrument itself when I need to be playing at lower volumes as there is not a gradual increase.
The clean tones are nice. I was not too concerned with the gain and 'more gain' channels as I have a bunch of vintage distortion and OD pedals, but when I don't feel like packing them, the amp does a good job in those regards.
The Reverb is a little antiquated to my ear; I find myself using it less and less. The footswitch that came with the amp crapped out but I found a cheap new one on eBay to replace it as I lost my receipt and Fender needed it to repair it.
I suggest an amp stand as it helped the amp project where I wanted it too.
I really hate that there is not an additional line out to run an extension cabinet; and also the fact that there is not headphone jack is annoying, but I guess some things had to be cut to stay in the affordable price range.

Great amp for the beginner gigger.

The Frontman has gotten me through many gigs as a beginner guitarist. After four years it's still playing as good as new. It's as loud as you need an amp to be for any gig. I would recommend installing some good caster wheels though. The clean channel is crisp and the distortion channel gives a nice growl to your playing, but I would recommend some extra boost if you want to play metal. For the price, it's hard to beat.
